Step into the Mind of Jasmyn Rowe

Jasmyn Rowe is a Canadian artist living in Toronto, Ontario. She practices mixed media, photography, and jewelry making, with a focus on the concept of black narrative and lifestyle. Jasmyn prefers to focus her creations on portrayals of black stereotypes and histories, lately concentrating on commemorating the missing stories in the past.

"History works as a form of education and knowledge about the past experiences and lives that came before us. Throughout history, there have been so many narratives and aspects of life that black Caribbean and North American people experienced and lived that have been overlooked and underappreciated. There is beauty and pride to be had in both the big and small actions, occupations, and life from both the past and the present that deserve to be recognized. I chose to do this through a version of the Art Nouveau style because it's an art form that was meant to represent beauty and idealization; however, Black people were not portrayed in this style. My work provides the opportunity for these individuals from the past (and even some in the present) to finally be seen in this light.
